Our newsroom has received numerous calls in the past hour from viewers who say they are concerned because their personal cell phone number is calling itself.

Last year, the Better Business Bureau warned that this new scheme is one of the most dangerous call spoofing crimes being used right now.

The new scam is reportedly tricking victims into giving away private information by calling them from what appears to be their own phone numbers.

According to the FCC, the “number spoofing” scam calls victims and displays the person’s own phone number on caller ID.

According to one viewer, who wanted to remain anonymous, this is exactly what happened to her around 7:35 Tuesday night.

“When I answered, although reluctantly, the woman on the other end of the phone said that my account was being hacked and that she wanted access to my social security and telephone account numbers to help me solve the problem.”

“I immediately hung up, that just didn’t sound right.”

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) website encourages anyone who receives this type of call to file a complaint with their office.
